Shadowing English and Moving Into Retelling

By Tree · Updated

Shadowing means listening to a speaker and repeating closely behind them while the audio continues. It focuses your attention on how the words are spoken. Retelling is a separate exercise: you put the source aside and explain its meaning in your own words.

The British Council’s speaking practice guide describes shadowing as following the audio without stopping it before repeating. On Tree, I use retelling for the main task of organizing an explanation. A short shadowing warm-up can be one way to notice a phrase before using it.

Start with a passage you understand

Pick a short, clearly recorded passage. Listen for meaning before attempting to follow the sound. Use a transcript to check unfamiliar words and important details. If you cannot follow the passage at all, choose easier material.

Try one short stretch at a time. Repeating after pausing the audio is a useful repetition exercise, but it is different from following a continuing recording. Choose the task deliberately.

Notice one feature of the speech

Pay attention to where the speaker groups words, stresses an important word or pauses between ideas. Focus on one feature rather than trying to copy everything at once. Record your attempt if you want to compare it with the audio.

If you need detailed pronunciation feedback, a suitable teacher or speech-focused resource may help. A transcript by itself cannot show all the features of your spoken delivery.

Change tasks to practice your own explanation

Stop the audio and put away the transcript. Explain the point and one supporting detail. This is now retelling. Return to the text afterward to check for missed or changed meaning.

For example, after following a passage about a project delay, explain the reason and proposed next step without using the same sentences. Then try the structure on a different situation.

Choose the exercise for the problem

If you want to notice rhythm or how a phrase sounds, work with the audio. If you lose the idea when the audio stops, practice a shorter retelling. If your own opinion becomes disorganized, use a speaking framework.

Read shadowing versus retelling for the comparison, then follow the 3R retelling exercise when you are ready to work on meaning and structure.
